Roaming around Cebu City

During our first day at Cebu, Rae and I were very tired and sleepy due to our early flight, but that didn’t stop us from roaming around the city. Below is our DIY Walking Tour at Cebu City!

Superior Twin – Bathroom

Sugbutel is one of the famous places for travelers for their cheap and clean accommodations. The family hotel is located near SM Cebu, where the jeepney terminal is also located. For solo travellers and socializers, they offer hostels which can cost Php200 to Php450 per person depending on the rooms and amenities. They have lockers where you can keep your personal belongings safe.

Originally, Rae and I planned to stay in the hotel with the Standard Twin room for Php1,350 per night, but unfortunately, the accommodation was fully booked, so we chose the Superior Twin instead for Php1,750 per night with breakfast. I suggest that if you’re planning to stay at Sugbutel, book in advance.

Our room was clean and comfy. Perfect for siesta! When we entered our room, we immediately slept. I didn’t have any proper sleep because I was too nervous for this trip.

The staff and the security guards were nice, too. They really helped us on how to commute around the city.

Where to eat?

Lechon!

One of my bucket list during my Cebu visit is to taste their famous lechon. Luckily, Sugbutel is located near CnT Lechon! We ordered 1/8th lechon and 2 rice for the both of us for only Php200. I must say, it was the best lechon I’ve ever tasted! I’m no foodie and I can’t describe how exactly the lechon tasted, so I will just recommend you guys to eat one when you visit Cebu, so you’ll know what exactly I’m talking about!

What to Visit?
Mactan Shrine/Lapu-Lapu Shrine

From the airport, we took a cab to visit Mactan Shrine. The shrine is dedicated to one of the first Filipino heroes, Lapu-Lapu, who defeated the Spanish soldiers led by Ferdinand Magellan on the Battle of Mactan. The tour guide said that they have an annual re-enactment of the Battle of Mactan, which is played by famous celebrities. This is a must-watch for non-Filipinos and Filipinos alike.

Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro

Fort San Pedro is a triangular shaped structure built for military defense by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The entrance fee is worth Php40.00/pax. Discounts are given to students and senior citizens. During our visit, some parts of the fort were under repair and there was a wedding ceremony at the venue.

I never thought that Magellan’s Cross is located at the middle of Cebu City. Ha-ha! It’s only a walking distance from Fort San Pedro. Outside the small building that houses Magellan’s Cross, representatives from Sinulog sell colored candles for Php10.00 each. The candles signify different aspects of life depending on its color. I bought one for ‘travel’ and Rae bought ‘career success’. The candles are not lit but just placed under the cross to maintain its cleanliness.

Basilica del Santo Niño/Basilica Minore del Santo Nino

Chuch under repair

Basilica del Santo Niño is probably one of the most beautiful churches that I have ever seen. Also, the Pilgrim Center of Basilica resembles some of the traditional temples in Korea, that’s why I was amazed when I saw it. The church was also under repair during our visit. (Why is everything under repair?)

Cebu Metropolitan Church

Cebu Metropolitan Church, or The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Most Holy Name of Jesus and of St. Vitales is one of the oldest churches in the city.

Cathedral Museum of Cebu

Located beside the Cebu Metropolitan Church is the Cathedral Museum of Cebu which closes at 5:00PM. We didn’t get a chance to visit inside, so we just ate street foods outside the museum. According to Wikipedia, the museum displays many architectural pieces and artifacts that were from the Spanish era.
